Choosing Purslane Extract for Skincare: How to Compare 1% and 5% Grades

A 5% purslane extract looks stronger than a 1% grade on a quotation. That comparison only holds if both percentages refer to the same measured components. One supplier may report polysaccharides. Another may specify flavonoids or leave the assay undefined.

What is being measured?

Huatai’s portulaca oleracea extract product page lists several liquid grades. Three entries show the distinction:

Supplier-Listed ContentAppearanceRecommended Addition
1% polysaccharideSlightly yellowish or reddish-brown1% – 5%
1% flavoneSlightly yellowish or reddish-brown1% – 5%
5% flavoneReddish-brown0.5%

These are water-soluble liquids with supplier-recommended use levels. The table does not establish equivalent performance at those doses.

The word “content” needs a definition in the specification. Does the assay apply to the supplied liquid or to dried extract? Which method and reference standard were used?

Until those points are clear, the two 1% entries cannot be treated as interchangeable. Nor can the recommended addition levels be used to rank their soothing activity. Color is a separate selection criterion. A darker liquid may be acceptable in a cream but unsuitable for a nearly colorless toner.

A Useful Study, With a Narrower Answer

Research on purslane benefits for skin includes a study of glycolic acid and UVB exposure. It combined a survey of 66 patients after acid peeling with laboratory experiments in HaCaT keratinocytes.

The extract findings came from the cell experiments. Treatment counteracted changes in filaggrin, a barrier-related protein, and inflammatory markers including IL-8. The survey did not test whether a purslane-containing product improved patients’ skin.

For a developer considering a calming formula, the model offers a reason to investigate the ingredient. It does not supply a human redness-reduction figure or an effective dose for Huatai’s liquid grades. Matching the plant name is only the beginning; the tested extract and the purchased material also need to be compared.

What Would Change the Sample Decision?

  • For a transparent serum, clarity and color at the intended addition level may decide which sample progresses first.
  • Obtain the complete composition before making the prototype. Water, glycols and preservatives supplied with the extract become part of the formula. If a sample introduces glycerin, for example, a hydration result may partly reflect that carrier.
  • A useful comparison keeps the base formula consistent and accounts for those added materials. Follow pH, viscosity, appearance and odor during stability testing.
  • If the brief promises less redness or stinging, include those outcomes in finished-product testing rather than substituting a cell marker for the intended benefit.

The Bottom Line: The most useful supplier report identifies the tested grade, concentration and control. Without that connection, even a detailed study may do little to distinguish the samples on the bench.

Supplier FAQ

1. What is purslane extract?
A botanical extract of Portulaca oleracea. The plant part, extraction process and supplied composition help define the commercial ingredient.
2. Is a 5% extract more effective?
The percentage alone cannot answer this. Compare the assay definition first, then performance data for the exact grades.
3. Which grade suits a clear serum?
Start with a grade whose color and clarity meet the brief at the proposed dose. Confirm that it stays clear in the finished base.
4. What documents should a supplier provide?
Request a current TDS, SDS, batch COA and full composition, with relevant contaminant and safety information.
5. What should the COA tell me?
It should identify the batch and give results against defined limits. Ask for the assay method and reporting basis if these are missing.
6. Can I use the published addition level?
Use it as a starting point for that grade. It still needs compatibility, stability and safety assessment in your formula.
7. Does cell research prove sensitive-skin suitability?
It can support ingredient screening. Suitability and comfort in the intended users require appropriate product-level evidence.
8. How do I request a comparable quotation?
Specify the assay, physical form, carrier requirements and quantity. Confirm MOQ, lead time, packaging and remaining shelf life.
